Stadt and Amt Kiel
Gericht/Gut/Amt Kronshagen
Kiel was given city rights in 1242, shortly after its founding. It was fortified in the early 14th century and became the seat of an Amt (of which it was not a member). In the 1544 partition of Holstein, Kiel and the surrounding Amt were assigned to Holstein-Gottorp. When the Gottorp line surrendered its Schleswig territories (including Gottorp castle) to Denmark in 1720, Kiel became became the seat of the Holstein territories (although they continued to use the Gottorp name). The Stadt and Amt reverted to the core Duchy in 1773, when the Gottorp line relinquished its claims in Holstein.
In 1334, the Heiligengeist monastery, an institution within Stadt Kiel, purchased Cronshagen, which was outside the Stadt to the west. The territory was functionally a Gut, but administered on behalf of the monastery by the Stadt itself. Because of the involvement of Stadt Kiel, I assign the Gut to Holstein-Gottorp after the 1544 partition. Cronshagen was formally leased to the Duke of Gottorp in 1573, converted to a Kanzleigut in 1667, and made an Amt in 1768—all as part of Holstein-Gottorp. Like Kiel, it reverted to the core Duchy of Holstein in 1773.
