Stadt and Kloster/Amt Segeberg

Stadt Oldesloe

Amt Traventhal

Gut Kuhlen

The Segeberg monastery (Kloster) was founded in the 12th century and began acquiring land shortly thereafter. Segeberg itself received city rights in the 1230s. In the 1544 partition of Holstein, the Stadt and Kloster remained in the core Duchy of Holstein, with the Stadt serving as the seat of the Duchy until 1648, when it moved to Glückstadt. The Kloster collapsed during the reformation and was converted to an Amt in 1555. I apply the term “Amt” to the Kloster, but add an * to signal that the designation was not always formal.

Kanzleigut Kuhlen was surrounded by Amt Segeberg, but was not part of the Amt (although it was always part of the core duchy). The exclave of Großenbrode, located near Heiligenhafen on the Baltic coast, was converted to an adlige Gut in 1640 and left the Amt. In 1675, Amt Traventhal was created out of territory previously in Amt Segeberg but east of the Trave River (on which the Stadt was located). Amt Traventhal was then assigned to the spin-off Duchy of Holstein-Plön. The Amt reverted to the core duchy when the Plön line died out in 1762, but it did not rejoin Amt Segeberg. Instead, it remained closely linked administratively to Amt Reinfeld and Amt Rethwisch. In 1682, Tarbek was transferred to Amt Plōn, where it remained even after the Plön line died out.

Stadt Oldesloe was located a bit to the south of Stadt Segeberg, but its administrative history is very similar. It also received city rights in the 1230s and was assigned to the core duchy in the 1544 partition. Neither Segeberg nor Oldesloe was ever part of a spin-off duchy.
