- 1266: Founded upon the partition of Sponheim-Starkenburg with full sovereignty over the County of Sayn and the Lordship of Homburg.
- 1294: Partitioned, retaining all of Sayn proper and half of Homburg, and adopts the name County of Sayn-Sayn
- 1478: Acquires partial sovereignty over Freier Grund (shared with Nassau-Dillenburg)
- 1560: Beginning of database (1)
- 1604: Surrenders its share of Homburg to the Counts of Sayn-Wittgenstein
- 1606: Terminated upon the extinction of the male line
