Electorate of Cologne:
Quasi-Countries under the administration of Gymnich-Vischel, Bourscheid-Büllerheim, or Quadt-Wickrath
Electorate of Cologne (adm. Gymnich-Vischel)
- Simplified country name: Cologne-Wald (1)
- Nation: Ecclesiastical Germany
- Chronology
- 1364: Prospective quasi-country created when the Lords of Gymnich were awarded administrative rights over Herrschaft Vischel (2)
- 1467: Prospective quasi-country partitioned with one branch seated in Vischel
- 1559: beginning of database (3)
- 1794: Quasi-country terminated upon occupation by France/end of database
(1) Wald was a lordship under Gymnich-Vischel sovereignty. I use it in the simplified name because its independence made Gymnich-Vischel foreign to the Electorate of Cologne, thus qualifying it for quasi-country status
(2) Before the independence of Wald, Vischel did not qualify for quasi-country status because that Gymnich line was still subject to the Electorate of Cologne. I nevertheless track it as a “prospective quasi-country”.
(3) The date of Wald’s independence is not known, but by 1559 (the default beginning date for the database throughout the Electorate of Cologne) I assume that it had achieved that status.
