Württemburgian Germany
Württemburgian Germany emerged as a single county in the early 12th century and significantly expanded its territory during the 13th and 14th centuries. It underwent one temporary partition as a county during the 15th century, then was promoted to a duchy in 1495, shortly after it was reunited. I begin the database at that point. In 1617, Württemburg spun off three small countries, all of which reverted to the core duchy by 1742.
In 1324, Württemburg acquired two small countries located in modern France. Then in 1444, it acquired the larger County of Montbeliard (rendered as Mömpelgard in German), also in modern France. Some of the time, the three countries were in personal union with Württemburg; at other times, they were spun off as a separate country. None were ever incorporated into the duchy itself. They are outside the geographic scope of the database.
In 1649, a branch of the Württemburgs acquired administrative rights over the Duchy of Oels in Silesia (modern Poland). Oels spun off three small countries in 1672 and 1705, none of which survived beyond 1745. I do not treat these as countries within Württemburgian Germany. Instead, I treat Oels and its spin-offs as quasi-countries within the Duchy of Silesia. Prior to 1742, they were in the nation of Habsburgian Bohemia. In 1742, they were awarded to the Kingdom of Prussia, which did not seek to qualify them for membership in the Empire. All are outside the geographic scope of the database.
In the following list of countries in Württemburgian Germany, countries and dates outside the chronological scope of the database are shown in italics. Entities in blue-gray fall outside the geographic scope of the database. Entities in gray fall outside of Württemburgian Germany (and the geographic scope of the database) but are included to account for the geographic responsibilities of the lineage-based entities.
