Mensfelden condominium

This page covers the territory of the Mensfelden condominium, a single-village Gericht east of Diez and adjacent to the Kirberg condominium. It was founded as condominium between Leiningian entities (soon replaced by Runkelian entities, who typically outsourced the administration to the Boos von Waldeck family), the Electorate of Trier and Walramian Nassuvian entities. It was never a coherent country, but it warrants country-level treatment to capture the different participants in the condominium over time. It lasted until the end of the Electorate of Trier was secularized.

To keep the country names from becoming too unwieldy, I drop terms that I think are expendable. The dropped terms are rendered in gray. The countries listed on this page were all unique to Mensfelden. Thus, Gericht Mensfelden was the only subdivision of any of them. We begin with a brief chronology of the condominium during the period before the database begins.

    • 1420: Condominium established between the Leiningen-Dagsburg, Trier, and Nassau-Weilburg
    • 1470: Leiningen share shifted to Runkelian Germany, when male line of Leiningen-Westerburg dies out (but county name does not change)
    • 1547: Leiningen-Westerburg partitioned, with interest in Mensfelden falling to Leiningen-Leiningen

Index of simplified country names associated with the Mensfelden condominium (earliest to latest)

Simplified country names identified as “external” or “shared” also apply to other condominia. Rather than duplicate the information on multiple pages, the information for the country combination is provided only on the page where it is identified as “shared”. On condominium pages that do not contain the information, the name is identified in the index as “external” and the link leads to the page where the information is “shared”. When you click on an “external” link, you can use the back arrow to return to the original page. Alternatively, you can use the links in the “Predecessor” or “Successor” sections of the combination you are looking at to go to the pages of the combinations that preceded or succeeded it.

Navigation hints:

  • Each simplified country name listed in the Index is linked to one of the country combinations that made up the condominium at some point in time. Once you reach the selected combinations, however, the listed simplified country name contains separate links to each of the participating countries mentioned in the name. There are even links to participants that, for space reasons, are not mentioned in the simplified name. Those are in gray.
  • To visit any other country in one of the nations mentioned on this page, click on that nation’s name, where you will find a list of countries.
  • To visit a country in a nation not mentioned on this page, go to Index of Nations.
