Stadt Rhens

Amt Zeltingen

Amt Alken

The three jurisdictions on this page are distant southern exclaves of the Electorate of Cologne:

  • Rhens has existed on the Rhein, just upstream from Koblenz, since at least the 9th century. It was purchased by the Archbishop of Cologne in 1174. It had achieved city rights by the early 15th century. The election of several German kings occurred here. Rhens was administered by foreigners until 1661.
  • Zeltingen is located on the Mosel between Zell and Bernkastel and actually lies further south than Frankfurt-am-Main. It has existed since at least the 12th century and has apparently belonged to the Electorate of Cologne the whole time. (Across the river from Zeltingen is territory that was disputed between Cologne and Trier. It contained no notable settlements and I exclude it from the database.)
  • Alken is also located on the Mosel, but much closer to the mouth and only a little bit to the west of Rhens. It was the site of a castle built by the Count Palatine, but was turned over to the joint rule of the Electorates of Cologne and Trier in 1248. I give the condominium the simplified name of Bonn\Trier.
