Amt Altenahr
Altenahr and many of the surrounding villages were settled by the late 9th century. Are castle was erected nearby in the 11th century, which became the seat of the County of Are. The county was donated to the Archbishop of Cologne in 1246. The territory covered by Amt Altenahr remained part of the Electorate of Cologne throughout the period covered by the database. (Abtei Prüm had an economic interest in Kesseling, but no administrative responsibility, so I ignore it.)

Adjacent to Amt Altenahr were five Unterherrschaften that were not part of the Amt, but were grouped with it for statistical purposes. Four of them were administered by nobles or monasteries that were subjects of the Archbishop. They were considered part of the Electorate. Herrschaft Lind was administered by the von der Leyen family, which was independent of the Archbishop. I place it in the country of Cologne-Adendorf until 1705 (when the Adendorf line died out) and in Cologne-Hohengeroldseck thereafter.
