Stadt and Amt Ahrweiler
Ahrweiler was settled on the Ahr River (south of Bonn) by the late 9th century. When the County of Are was established in the 11th century, it included Ahrweiler. The county was donated to the Archbishop of Cologne in 1246, and soon thereafter, Ahrweiler began functioning as a city. It, along with some surrounding villages, remained part of the Electorate of Cologne throughout the period covered by the database.

- Gelsdorf, the further of the two, was administered by the County of Schleiden. Sovereignty (but not administration) was transferred to the Duchy of Jülich (Amt Neuenahr) in 1688, and it became fully independent in 1737.
