Amt Nideggen

Nideggen Castle was built by the Duke of Jülich in the late 12th century during a period of contention with the Electorate of Cologne. It was the seat of an Amt, but the city of Nideggen itself was not founded until the 14th century.

 

The Amt initially contained Stadt Nideggen and eight Gerichte, which were administered by appointees of the Duke. Gericht Niederberg was transferred from the Electorate of Cologne in 1648. In contrast, eight adjacent Unterherrschaften were not legally part of the Amt, but were typically grouped with it for statistical purposes. They were administered either by local nobles or, on occasion, by foreigners. There are enough of them associated with this Amt to warrant their own page.
