Amt Grevenbroich
Amt Grevenbroich consisted of two geographically distinct Unterämter—Gladbach in the north and Grevenbroich in the south.
Gladbach was the site of a monastery that was built in the 10th century, which led to the modern name of Mönchengladbach. (“Mönchen” is a reference to the monks. That addition helps distinguish the city from Bergisch Gladbach, east of Cologne). The Unteramt consisted of Stadt Gladbach (a status achieved in the 14th century) and two Gerichte, the main one seated in Gladbach itself and the other seated in Hardt. I recognize only the Stadt and the two Gerichte—not the Unteramt.

Grevenbroich was also the site of a monastery as well as a castle, both built in the late 13th century. It was awarded to the County/Duchy of Jülich in 1307 and became the seat of an Amt and a Gericht. The Unteramt also included two noncontiguous Gerichte—Otzenrath to the west and Königshoven to the south.

Two Unterherrschaften, administered by local nobles, were not legally part of the Amt, but were associated with it for statistical purposes. One (Rheydt) was adjacent to Gericht Gladbeck and the other (Neurath) was adjacent to Gericht Grevenbroich.

Chronological list of countries to which Amt Grevenboich (except Grimlinghausen) and associated Unterherrschaften belonged
Gericht Grimlinghausen, an exclave on the Rhein, upstream from Neuss, was grouped with Unteramt Grevenbroich for statistical purposes. However, it was actually a condominium with the Electorate of Cologne and I place it in the country of Jülich\Bonn.
