Amt Brüggen

The territory of Amt Brüggen originally belonged to Grafschaft Kessel, which was based in the modern Netherlands. When the Kessel line died out in 1304, sovereignty over the German portions fell to the Country/Duchy of Jülich.

The Amt was split between two Gerichte, the largest of which (Brüggen) was further subdivided into four “Orte” (literally “places”). I recognize the Orte as the primary subdivisions of the Amt. The village of Tegelen, in Brachter Ort, is now in the Netherlands and is excluded from the database.
